I have been asked quite a few questions regarding banana island.  Why only bananas?  What about protein?  Is it safe to only eat bananas?  How many days do you eat only bananas?  Just to name a few.

By consuming one type of food, preferably fruit and in this case bananas, we allow our digestive system to have a break.  Our digestion typically consumes over 50% of our energy.  Eating one type of food will reduce this energy consumption dramatically.  The energy saved by “going on the island” can be utilized for cleansing the blood stream, flushing the bowel, detoxing, reducing water retention and healing the gut which is the root cause of most diseases.  When we give our digestion a break we allow diseases to start healing.  Fruit digests so quickly because it already contains the enzymes that break it down so it practically digests itself with a little help from our digestive tract.

Going to Banana Island is a good way to remind us that food is fuel and should only be consumed when we are hungry.  Too often food is eaten when people are bored, depressed, anxious, etc.  This has helped contribute to wide spread obesity and poor health.

I chose bananas for this “island” because they are truly a magical fruit.  Each medium banana (7″ long) provides an average of 100 cal.  I am shooting for between 2000-2500 calories per day.  This keeps my metabolic fire burning through the day and keeps my immune system strong.  Bananas are chalked full of potassium, fiber, B vitamins, iron, and many others.  They are high in tryptophan which is converted into serotonin, causing you to feel happier.  Being high in potassium and low in salt, they lower your blood pressure and protect against heart attack and stroke.

What about protein?  The Standard American Diet puts way too much emphasis on getting what the FDA and USDA considers to be “enough” protein.  This is because they want to push sales of the government subsidized meat, dairy and egg industries.  According to the National Center for Bio-technical Information, research has shown that human mother’s milk contains 0.8% – 0.9% protein.  This tells us that for a growing baby, that is all the protein that we require by design!  What, then, happens when we stop growing?  Protein’s main function is to provide the building blocks for growth.  When you are working out and building muscle, additional protein will give you better results but when doing moderate exercise to stay in shape, getting enough protein is not something that we need to be concerned with.  High-protein drinks will strain the kidneys and the pancreas.

Even a diet consisting of ONLY fruits will give us more protein than we actually need to survive (an average of 5% – 20% depending on the fruit).  Going to Banana Island will also help you lose weight but you shouldn’t make this your new weight loss diet.  Healthy weight loss and maintenance is about your lifestyle, not a temporary diet.  This is a way to truly heal the body in a holistic way and become more aware of our body’s specific caloric needs.  Be prepared to eat whole fruits, vegetables, some nuts and seeds after you come off the “island”.

For those wondering if it is safe to eat only bananas for a period of time I want to remind you that they are very nutritious and this is not something you will be doing for the rest of your life.

I am now on day 5 of my Banana Island feast.  I fought a headache for the first couple days due to detoxing, but now I feel clear and I have more energy.  I will keep you updated.  Make sure you are drinking enough water, three to four quarts of water per day (this includes the water in your smoothies).  If you need a little crunch, you can add in a little celery, cucumber or romaine lettuce, as needed.  I also add in Organic Coconut Sugar to my smoothies if I need extra calories to meet my requirements for the day.  Remember, a plant-based diet is not about restriction, it is about abundance.  Restriction causes an unhealthy relationship with food and that is counter-productive.

I recommend at least three days when doing an “island” of any fruit because it will give your body time to feel the benefits.

I enjoy my bananas as “Nice Cream”, Smoothies, Smoothie bowls, cut up or whole.
